Job Summary
The Prompt Designer develops, tests, and refines prompts and AI interaction patterns to produce consistent, accurate, and safe outputs from large language models (LLMs). This role partners with product, engineering, and subject-matter experts to translate user needs into well-structured instructions, evaluation criteria, and governed prompt assets that improve quality, user experience, and business outcomes.
What will you do
- Design and maintain structured prompts, templates, and output schemas aligned to product and stakeholder requirements.
- Define expected outputs, constraints, and completion criteria for deliverables; document assumptions, edge cases, and limitations.
- Apply LLM best practices (context management, instruction hierarchy, few-shot examples) to improve accuracy and consistency.
- Test and debug prompt behavior through iterative experimentation; analyze failures and reduce hallucinations and variability.
- Create evaluation approaches (test sets, rubrics, human review workflows) and track quality over time.
- Implement PromptOps practices: version control, change management, documentation, and release processes for prompt assets.
- Monitor production performance (quality, safety, latency, and cost) and optimize prompts for efficiency.
- Collaborate with UX/Product teams to design user-friendly AI interactions, workflows, and guardrails.
- Partner with engineering to integrate prompts into applications, including retrieval-augmented workflows where applicable.
- Ensure prompts and AI experiences align with governance, security, privacy, and safety standards.
Essential Qualifications
Communication & Writing (Core)
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce clear, unambiguous instructions.
- Experience creating structured prompts, prompt templates, and specifying output formats.
- Ability to translate business needs into actionable prompt requirements and documentation.
AI/LLM Knowledge (Core)
- Working knowledge of GPT/LLMs and how they respond to instructions and context.
- Understanding of hallucinations, bias, and common failure modes.
- Familiarity with prompting techniques (e.g., zero-shot/few-shot, chain-of-thought alternatives, tool/function calling concepts) and constraints.
Analytical Thinking (Core)
- Ability to test prompts systematically, interpret outputs, and identify root causes of failures.
- Comfort with iterative refinement, A/B-style comparisons, and accuracy/quality improvement.
- Ability to design simple evaluation criteria and measure improvements over time.
PromptOps & Governance (Core)
- Experience with prompt versioning, documentation, and change control.
- Understanding of monitoring needs for quality and safety in production.
- Awareness of cost optimization levers (token usage, response length constraints, prompt efficiency).
UX & Product Thinking (Core)
- Ability to design intuitive AI interactions that fit user workflows.
- Experience collaborating with product/UX to align AI behavior with user intent.
- Understanding of how to set expectations and provide helpful, safe responses.
